Following our recent Spirion + Microsoft Purview: 8 FAQs on Enhanced Data Protection post on and recent Spirion-Microsoft Purview integration tech talk, we’re tackling 7 more frequently asked questions. Explores how Spirion enhances MPIP.

1. Why would we need Spirion if we already use Microsoft Purview?

Many customers already using Microsoft Purview wonder if they also need Spirion. Spirion complements Purview by providing additional capabilities such as more advanced data discovery, multiple labels for detailed reporting, and on-premises scanning, which Purview lacks.

Spirion can also fill gaps in Purview’s Data Loss Prevention (DLP) capabilities and extend data protection to environments outside the Microsoft ecosystem, offering a more comprehensive solution.

2. How does Spirion’s classification system compare to Microsoft Purview?

While Microsoft Purview allows for the assignment of a default classification to every document, Spirion’s classification system is more detailed and flexible.

Spirion can apply multiple labels to a document based on different criteria, providing more granular control and better reporting. This is particularly useful for organizations needing deeper insights into their data and more complex classification schemes.

3. Can Spirion work with Microsoft’s Compliance Center and labeling policies?

Yes, Spirion can integrate with Microsoft’s Compliance Center and leverage existing Purview or AIP labeling policies. This allows organizations to maintain consistency in their data protection strategies across both platforms and ensures that labeling policies are enforced whether data is processed by Spirion or Purview.

4. How does Spirion handle on-premises data that Purview cannot scan?

Spirion provides on-premises scanning capabilities in addition to cloud and hybrid sensitive data discovery capabilities. This allows organizations to classify and protect sensitive data stored on local servers or endpoints that may not be covered by Purview’s cloud-centric scanning tools.

This ensures that data across all environments, including end-user workstations, is fully protected.

5. Can Spirion help with complex data retention and destruction policies when using Purview?

Spirion’s comprehensive Playbook system allows for a multitude of different decision trees to ensure the right label is applied to the right file at the right time. This enables Spirion to analyze both the content as well as the metadata of the file and either take remediation actions independently or enable Purview to enact a downstream activity regarding retention or destruction.

6. Can Spirion and Purview work together to manage sensitive data across cloud and on-premises environments?

Yes, Spirion and Purview can work together to protect sensitive data across both cloud and on-premises environments. Spirion’s integration with Purview allows labels and classifications created in Purview to be used by Spirion for on-premises data, ensuring consistent data protection across all environments.

7. Can Spirion handle data discovery and classification across environments that Microsoft Purview doesn’t cover?

Yes, Spirion can handle data discovery and classification across a wider range of file types and environments than Purview. This includes non-Microsoft environments, on-premises data, and more obscure file formats. Spirion’s robust data discovery engine ensures that sensitive data is identified and classified regardless of where it resides.
