IRS Breach is Nothing New… they’ve already published 472,000 SSNs… and they’re still online.
Several news media outlets have reported that the IRS mistakenly published about 2,000 social security numbers in tax returns belonging to political organizations.
Unfortunately, Identity Finder first reported on a similar breach last year. You can download the study here. In this report we scanned 2.89 million Form 990s belonging to 728,847 organizations from 2001-2006. We found 472,866 SSNs (171,005 Unique) on those forms. At least 35% belonged to tax preparers, and the remainder belonged to scholarship recipients, directors, trustees, and donors (in order of proportion).
